Micro Majesty 👑 the world’s smallest micro sculpture of the St Edwards Crown in the Eye of a Needle 2023. A small tribute to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III 👑
My tiny micro-sculpture of the St Edwards Crown is made entirely by my hand. I made a 24-carat gold frame, wove it around a grain of sand I’ve carved, encrusted it with natural real jewels and painted the sculpture using my eyelash as a paintbrush. I made a selection of tiny tools, explicitly handmade for this crown project. Finally, I mounted it upon a carved nylon plinth and inserted it into the tiny eye of a needle. The sculpture took me just over six hundred hours to make during a seven-week period of twelve to sixteen-hour daily sessions. Working through the night and early mornings, when there are fewer vibrations and air disturbances.
“It drove me mad to make this when my work is finished, it doesn’t belong to me anymore, this crown is for people to see, it’s one of the hardest and most detailed sculptures I’ve ever undertaken to date”
I intend to exhibit the crown, rather than give it to King Charles, preferring it to be a “gift”
for everyone to enjoy rather than hide in a private collection. I may add the crown to my current exhibition at Nottingham’s Natural History Museum, Wollaton Hall. A free-to-enter family event by Nottingham City Council where I have released my new thought-provoking collection of works aptly named Disappearing World. A new series of micro masterpieces reflecting biodiversity in danger, bringing attention to small things that matter.
Please share, leave a comment, and marvel in wonder at my magnificent micro masterpiece.
