The night was filled with inspiring conversations, great energy, and a celebration of the Caribbean’s best in the heart of London. One of the highlights for me was meeting the legendary Sir Lenny Henry, whose warmth and wit left a lasting impression.

Thank you to the organisers, especially the UWI team, for hosting such a meaningful and memorable event. I am truly humbled to have been honoured among so many who are dedicated to making a difference. Here’s to continuing to inspire, educate, and elevate future generations.

A Moment of Reflection: Honoured to be Honoured

Standing on the stage to accept the award, Dr. Wigan reflected on his path to this moment. From humble beginnings, facing learning challenges and rejection, to becoming one of the world’s most renowned micro-engravers, Willard’s life is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and self-belief. He shared his story with the audience, acknowledging the many hurdles he faced along the way, and how each one shaped him into the artist and person he is today.

“I’m truly honoured and blessed to have been nominated for this award and to be standing before you tonight,” Dr. Wigan said during his speech. “This recognition is not just for me, but for the countless individuals who have supported me along the way—my team, my mentors, and my community. It’s a reflection of all the people who have believed in me when the world didn’t.”

Dr. Wigan’s journey, as he shared with those gathered, is a journey of vision. The microscopic art he creates, small enough to fit into the eye of a needle, represents the enormous potential that exists within each of us. He spoke about the importance of education in his life, and how the process of learning and growing, no matter the obstacles, has been one of the most pivotal parts of his success.

A Night of Inspiration and Giving Back

The theme of the night, “Educate To Elevate” was not just a slogan but a guiding principle that resonated deeply with Dr. Wigan. He spoke passionately about the importance of nurturing the creative minds of tomorrow and how art and education can be powerful tools for social change. The funds raised from the event will go toward supporting UWI postgraduate students whose work addresses the urgent issues of climate change and sustainability - topics Dr. Wigan believes are critical for future generations.

Throughout the evening, it was clear that the event was more than just a celebration -it was a call to action. Dr. Wigan shared his own experiences with the crowd, encouraging everyone to embrace their unique talents and never let their circumstances dictate their potential. His personal story, shared so openly that evening, served as a beacon of hope and a reminder that no dream is too small, no challenge too great.

Gratitude and Blessings: A Heartfelt Thank You

As the evening drew to a close, Dr. Wigan felt immense gratitude for the incredible support he has received throughout his career. “This award is not just for me; it’s for my team at Willard Wigan Art, for the foundation, for my family, and for all those who have walked with me,” he expressed. “It’s a blessing to be part of something bigger than myself. I am humbled and grateful for this recognition.”

The night was a perfect example of the transformative power of education, art, and philanthropy. It was an evening that not only honoured Dr Wigan but also highlighted the importance of community, collaboration, and giving back. As he looked around the room, he was filled with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to continue creating art that challenges perceptions and inspires others.

Looking Ahead: A Future of Creativity and Giving Back

Dr Wigan’s award at the UWI London Benefit Dinner is just one milestone in what has been a remarkable career. But more importantly, it marks the beginning of a new chapter—a chapter where he will continue to use his platform to support education, inspire creativity, and advocate for social change. As he left the stage that evening, surrounded by friends, family, and supporters, it was clear that this was only the beginning of even greater things to come.

For Dr. Wigan, the night was not just about receiving an award - it was a moment to reflect on the impact of his journey and to look forward to the endless possibilities that lie ahead. The journey of “Educate to Elevate” is one he’s been living for years, and he will continue to elevate others through his work and his example for many years to come.
